Splint / night guards
Splints/night guards are used to treat bruxism (teeth grinding/clenching). They can also be used to manage jaw dysfunction, protecting the temporomandibular joints (TMJ’s) from excessive bit stress.
Bite and jaw imbalances cause overworking of the muscles of mastication, with the consequent accumulation of lactic acid in the facial muscles, which can result in headaches. By using a splint/night guard the dental bite imbalance can be restored eliminating pain and headaches.
Patients suffering from this condition will be fitted with a custom made splint/night guard, which is made from heat-cured acrylic resin, and moulded to fit the upper and lower teeth.
If you grind or clench your teeth contact the dentist and discuss your problem. It could well be that with a fitted splint/night guard the problem can be rectified, and you will no longer be suffering with a painful jaw and headaches.
